The Farm

Frontieress Farm strives for ecological consciousness, environmental awareness and is dedicated to using sustainable growing practices and organic methods. This means chemical free, locally grown, and seasonally available. Crops are rotated and compost is used to build up healthy soil and manage pests. Alaska’s long summer days make it easy to utilize solar power for our fencing and greenhouses. Growing and selling to the local community encourages local food sovereignty and decreases our ecological footprint. 80% of the cut flower production in the United States is imported, most of which is deeply entrenched in a globalized flower industry built on cheap flowers, pollution, and unfair working conditions. Alaska, in turn, imports 90% of food and goods. Frontieress Farm challenges these standards. From farm to table, field to vase, farmer to community.

“We need beauty in the world because it makes us ache to be worthy of it.”

-Mary Oliver

With roots reaching back to my grandparents’ farm in Belgium, I carried an intuitive love of working the land for over thirty years. I began working professionally as farmhand in California during my off seasons as a wildland firefighter. Like wildflowers after a fire, I felt growth and renewal through this work. I went on to help build Earth Island Herbs’ Medicinal Demonstration Garden in the beautiful Ojai Valley. There I continued my journey into the great healing power of plants and artistry of nature. I have since travelled and been inspired by different agricultural projects around the world. Then I found myself in Alaska. The great open spaces stole my heart. I continued to work on local farms in the area, learning agricultural practices to accommodate the arctic environment.

Frontieress Farm is an accumulation of these experiences. It is a hail to lady strength and self-sufficiency in this last frontier. I feel privileged to be cultivating and sharing the beauty, vitality, and connectedness of nature.

Frontieress Farm would not be possible without the help of some amazing volunteers. We value each and every person that has selflessly come to put their hands in the dirt, help harvest for market, or otherwise helped promote our small farm. Please contact us at frontieressfarm@gmail.com to become a volunteer!
